Denotation + Connotation = Sign
Denotation = literally what is there
Connotation = the hidden meaning behind what is there and how it makes the audience feel/what it makes them think.
There are five elements to consider when looking at Mise-en-scène.
- Setting and Props
- Costume, hair and make-up
- Facial expressions and body language
- Lighting and colour
- Positioning of characters/objects within a frame
